Central Texas Veterinary Surgery is a veterinary surgical referral practice staffed by specialists in veterinary surgery. Dr. Stephen Kerpsack, Dr. Stephanie Beardsley,  Dr. Alice Runk , Dr. John Beven, Dr. Sara Gower and Dr. Laurie Zacher work as a group to combine their knowledge and skills thus expanding the level of patient care provided for your pet.

Each surgeon completed an internship and surgical residency after receiving their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. The Small Animal Surgery Residency program involves three years of specialized surgical training in a program sponsored by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (acvs.org). The ACVS is a governing body that both supervises the training and certifies the participants of the program. During the Residency program, surgeons are trained in the disciplines of soft tissue, orthopedic, and neurosurgery along with radiology, anesthesia and clinical pathology.

With the combined efforts of our surgeons, we are able to provide the latest in specialized surgical diagnostics and treatments needed by your pet. Services offered include thoracic and cardiovascular procedures, thorascopic and laporscopic abdominal surgery, ear canal surgery/ablation, perineal hernia correction, oronasal surgery, perianal fistula treatment, spinal stabilization, treatment of intervertebral disc disease and other neurosurgical procedures, orthopedic surgery, minimally invasive fracture repair, arthroscopic joint surgery, cruciate ligament repair including TPLO, total hip replacement revision, laser procedures, reconstructive surgery, surgical oncology (cancer), anesthesia and surgery for high risk patients, lameness evaluations, evaluations of diseases of the spinal cord, along with fluoroscopic and cytoscopic procedures are also offered by CTVS.

At CTVSH, safe anesthesia and continuous monitoring are a priority. We have the latest in anesthetic monitoring equipment including EKG’s, end tidal CO2, oxygen saturation, and blood pressure monitors. We also feel strongly about minimizing our patients’ pain before, during and after surgery. We commonly use epidurals and local anesthetics to decrease the amount of post-operative pain to allow for lower levels of anesthetic use. The majority of surgical patients are prescribed an oral medication to be given at home to help with discomfort.

In most instances, required diagnostics will be performed the day of the initial consultation. Dependent on the doctors’ surgery schedule and the number of emergencies, surgeries can typically be performed on the day of or the day after the initial exam. Please be prepared to leave your pet with us by bringing any medications or special diets that are currently being given.

The Mighty Texas Dog Walk is an annual event put on by the Texas Hearing and Service Dog Organization.  Central Texas Veterinary Specialty Hospital has participated and volunteered at the walk for the last 5 years.  We feel giving back to the community is part of our mission at CTVSH.

THSD is a non-profit organization that trains Service Dogs and Hearing Dogs to assist people with disabilities. www.servicedogs.org

Hearing Dogs are trained to alert their deaf owners by touch and lead them to everyday sounds, such as a door knock, smoke alarm or telephone. We also train Service Dogs to assist people with balance while walking, e.g. people with Parkinson's, polio survivors, and people who have had strokes.

Dogs Service assist individuals with physical disabilities by opening doors, fetching wheelchairs, retrieving dropped items, operating light switches, moving paralyzed limbs and getting help.

THSD adopts all of our dogs from animal shelters and rescue leagues. Utilizing positive reinforcement, we train the dogs, pair them with their new partners and then train them as teams — all free of charge to the recipients.

THSD invests $17,500 in training each Service Dog team and each Hearing Dog team. We provide the dogs and training free of charge to recipients. We rely on your donations to pay for the cost of training. Please donate today! (Your donation to THSD is tax deductible! Tax ID number 76-0260567).

As you can see, this is a worthy cause, one well worth our support! 1850 dogs crossed the finish line, with several hundred more not participating in the walk. THSD estimates that they have raised over $80,000.
