Central Texas Veterinary Surgery is a veterinary surgical referral practice staffed by specialists in veterinary surgery. Dr. Stephen Kerpsack, Dr. Stephanie Beardsley, Dr. Alice Runk , Dr. John Beven, Dr. Sara Gower and Dr. Laurie Zacher work as a group to combine their knowledge and skills thus expanding the level of patient care provided for your pet. Each surgeon completed an internship and surgical residency after receiving their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. The Small Animal Surgery Residency program involves three years of specialized surgical training in a program sponsored by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (acvs.org). The ACVS is a governing body that both supervises the training and certifies the participants of the program. During the Residency program, surgeons are trained in the disciplines of soft tissue, orthopedic, and neurosurgery along with radiology, anesthesia and clinical pathology. With the combined efforts of our surgeons, we are able to provide the latest in specialized surgical diagnostics and treatments needed by your pet. Services offered include thoracic and cardiovascular procedures, thorascopic and laporscopic abdominal surgery, ear canal surgery/ablation, perineal hernia correction, oronasal surgery, perianal fistula treatment, spinal stabilization, treatment of intervertebral disc disease and other neurosurgical procedures, orthopedic surgery, minimally invasive fracture repair, arthroscopic joint surgery, cruciate ligament repair including TPLO, total hip replacement revision, laser procedures, reconstructive surgery, surgical oncology (cancer), anesthesia and surgery for high risk patients, lameness evaluations, evaluations of diseases of the spinal cord, along with fluoroscopic and cytoscopic procedures are also offered by CTVS. At CTVSH, safe anesthesia and continuous monitoring are a priority. We have the latest in anesthetic monitoring equipment including EKG’s, end tidal CO2, oxygen saturation, and blood pressure monitors. We also feel strongly about minimizing our patients’ pain before, during and after surgery. We commonly use epidurals and local anesthetics to decrease the amount of post-operative pain to allow for lower levels of anesthetic use. The majority of surgical patients are prescribed an oral medication to be given at home to help with discomfort. In most instances, required diagnostics will be performed the day of the initial consultation. Dependent on the doctors’ surgery schedule and the number of emergencies, surgeries can typically be performed on the day of or the day after the initial exam. Please be prepared to leave your pet with us by bringing any medications or special diets that are currently being given.
